Kent State Student, Quavaugntay Tyler, Arrested In Campus Shooting

A student from Kent State University was arrested on Wednesday after opening fire on campus, UPI reported.

Quavaugntay Tyler, 24, was apprehended by authorities around 9:15 p.m. -- about an hour after his gunshot prompted a campus lockdown.

According to CBS News, the gunfire occurred after a confrontation between Tyler and a woman he was dating outside of Bowman Hall -- one of the school's academic buildings.

The woman's name has not been released.

Tyler suffered from a gunshot wound to the hand and was transported to Robinson Memorial Hospital. He was charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

No one else was injured in the incident.

School officials used their Twitter account to notify students that the suspect was arrested and no longer posed a threat to the campus.

"Kent State University - Campus Safety Update; Suspect Apprehended," the tweet read, accompanied by a link to a press release.

The press release mentioned university police and 10 outside police agencies responded to the shooting and determined the gunshot was fired into the ground.

Kent State University, located in Kent, Ohio with a student population of 42,000, was the scene of deadly shootings by the Ohio National Guard during a Vietnam War protest in 1970.

Four students died and nine others were injured in the shooting, and the guardsmen were taken to court but later acquitted by a judge.
