A couple was arrested Tuesday night after getting into a fight at a hotel in Connecticut, one day before they were scheduled to appear on "The Maury Show" with Maury Povich.
Shantae McGhee-Brown, 25, and 46-year-old John Coley were arrested at the DoubleTree hotel in Norwalk after they got into a brawl that began when McGee-Brown found out Coley was sleeping with her mother, police told The Hour.
The two traveled from Chicago to Connecticut to "be on a local TV show, probably surrounding the nature of the arrest," Christine Schwartzstein, McGhee's defense attorney, said according to The Hour.
Coley was slated to take a lie detector test on the show.
Officers arrived at the hotel around midnight on Tuesday after receiving a call for a disturbance on the third floor. McGhee, who was found in the hallway wearing nothing but a towel, told police she threw a vase at her boyfriend and broke a table.
Officials from the "Maury" show confirmed the couple was scheduled for a taping on Wednesday, CBS News reported. The two were supposed to stay in separate hotels rooms, but began fighting when they came across one another, The Hour reported.
Coley first told police that McGhee-Brown was fighting with "another John Coley," Sergeant Lisa Cotto, a Norwalk Police Department spokeswoman, told The Hour.
The couple was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and third-degree criminal mischief. The girlfriend was also charged with interfering with an officer.
Both were held on $100,000 bail and were arraigned in Norwalk Superior Court on Wednesday. Judge William Wenzel dismissed the criminal mischief charge against Coley, The Hour reported. The judge also ordered that Coley and McGee-Brown stay away from each other.
McGee-Brown was released and is scheduled to appear in court on April 30. Coley, who served a prison sentence for murder from 1998 to 2010, has a court date for April 10.
