Detroit (2-0) opened the season with two straight wins. Anibal Sanchez gets his first start of 2014 on Friday, looking to build upon his 14-8 record and 2.57 ERA from last season.
"Every year you have to make some goals," Sanchez told the team website, via ESPN. "For me, it's getting to 200 innings, get 200 strikeouts, get my 33 starts a year. That's my goal every single year: Control what I can control."
Sanchez will oppose Orioles pitcher Miguel Gonzalez, who's also making his first start of the season. Gonzalez finished 2013 with an 11-8 record, 3.78 ERA and 120 strikeouts.
Baltimore opened the season with a 2-1 win over Boston, and then dropped the next two games of the series. The Orioles struggled at the plate and hit a dismal .216 in the series against the Red Sox.
"That's why they were the last team standing last year," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "They pitched better than everybody else for the most part, and I don't think I'm telling anybody anything they don't know. You pitch real well, you've got a chance to play extra games at the end of the year."
