Deltopia 2014: 100 Arrested, 44 Injured In Santa Barbara College Party Brawl

At least 100 people were arrested and 44 people were injured following a college party that turned into a street brawl in California, the Associated Press reported.

The rowdy incident occurred on Saturday around 9:30 p.m. in Isla Vista, where the University of California at Santa Barbara celebrates their annual spring break party called Deltopia.

According to the Ventura County Star, the violence began after a campus police officer was hit in the head with a bag full of alcohol. Once someone was arrested, the crowd reportedly became unruly.

Others in the crowd of 15,000 then began throwing rocks, bricks, and bottles at officers, authorities said, and even lit fires and damaged police vehicles.

Five other officers were wounded -- including one who was hit in the face with a brick -- and two who were hit in the hand with bottles, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office said. In order to halt the growing violence, authorities used tear gas and foam projectiles.

The brawl finally came to an end early Sunday once officers received backup from other law enforcement agencies, the AP said.

Many Deltopia attendees and UC Santa Barbara students took to Twitter following the celebration madness and didn't seem phased by the craziness.

"I don't care what anyone says, Deltopia was awesome," one attendee tweeted.

Others expressed different feelings about the spring break party.

"Kinda glad I didn't go to Deltopia. Friends got locked up, tear gassed, and shot by rubber bullets," another person said on Twitter.
