"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" crushed the box office competition its opening weekend bring in a whopping $96.2 million in North America, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Marvel's superhero sequel grossed a total of $303.3 million worldwide. According to Forbes, the "Captain America" sequel has broken the record for the biggest box office debut in April.
"That's 47% larger than the $65m earned by Captain America (and the first Thor) back in 2011 and 13% larger than the $85m earned by Thor: The Dark World on its first weekend last November," Forbes reports. "It's just a bit under the $102m opening weekend of Iron Man and obviously under the $128m earned by Iron Man 2, $175m earned by Iron Man 3, and the $207m debut of The Avengers."
The film stars Chris Evans Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill and Robert Redford as Agent Alexander Pierce.
