16-Year-Old Student, Michael Flournoy, Fatally Shot In Chicago

A 16-year-old high school student was fatally shot in Chicago on Saturday night, WGN-TV reported.

According to witness reports, Michael Flournoy got into an argument with an individual driving a gray or silver car near 93rd and Dobson Street. During a heated exchange, the person inside pulled out a gun and shot Flournoy in the head.

Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene minutes following the shooting.

Flournoy was a sophomore at Simeon High School, where he played football and was a member of the wrestling team. On Sunday, a vigil was held for mourning family and friends.

"The people that stole his life had no reason," Flournoy's grandfather, Samuel Woods, told the Chicago Tribune. "There's no way I'm gonna stand here and say, 'I'm OK. I don't know how long it will be before I'm OK.'"

Sabrina Butler, the teen's grandmother, believes her grandson was walking to the movies with his cousin and was approached by someone who didn't want the boys talking to his daughter.

"He never made it to the store to get chips," Butler said. "If he had said, 'We'll meet at the movies,' he'd still be alive today."

Friends and family told the Tribune that Flourney was planning on continuing with sports and dreamed of becoming an architect. His wrestling coach, Carnell Jones, told WGN-TV that he was "just a good kid."

"He worked really hard and was just really focused on doing better, doing well," Jones said. "He was always talking about his grades. It's just shocking and really hard to swallow."

Flournoy's cousin, 22-year-old Patrick Stribling, was shot and killed in Chicago in 2009. According to the Tribune, he was a witness in a murder trial. Two men -- Jeffrey Allen and Caleb Charleston -- were convicted and sentenced to prison.
