St. Louis looks to bounce back from their series loss against Pittsburgh when Cincinnati, a team they defeated twice last week, visits on Monday. The difference now, though, is it is the Cardinals' turn to play at home.
"Opening day in Cincinnati, we were all anxious to just take off realizing there were not a whole lot of people that wanted us to do well -- even though there was a lot of red in the stands," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny told the Associated Press. "There's nothing like being home for the first one. ...
"This is pretty cool, this is the stuff you talk about when you're playing Wiffle ball in the backyard. Don't let this slip by, but by the way, let's get something done here."
Monday's pitching matchup is a rematch of Wednesday's 13 2/3-inning game, the only game of series that Cincinnati won. St. Louis' Michael Wacha (0-0, 0.00 ERA) gets his second start of the season and will oppose Cincinnati's Tony Cingrani (0-0-, 0.00) again.
Cincinnati (2-4) is still looking to win their first series of the season. After losing 2-1 to the Cardinals, the Reds dropped their first two games against the Mets before winning the third game.
Although Cincinnati has the chance to spoil St. Louis's home opener, Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips insists it's just about leaving with the win.
"It's all about getting wins, regardless of what you're trying to spoil or whatever," Phillips said. "You want to go out there and get as many wins as possible because you never know if these games matter later on in the season."
