'Opposition Of Mars 2014': Cosmic Alignment Of Mars, Earth And Sun To Take Place On April 8, Live Stream Available

Set to appear the biggest and brightest planet, Mars will be appearing closest to the earth than it has been in the last 7 years, Top News reported.

The event, dubbed as Opposition of Mars, will take place on Tuesday, April 8.

In an event that occurs every 26 months, the Sun, Earth and Mars will be seen lining up in a straight line in the middle in the south east sky after sunset.

"As the distance from Earth to the Sun is lesser than what it is between the Sun and Mars, Earth is able to complete one revolution of the Sun in 365 days, whereas Mars takes 687 days to do the same," Top News reported. "This is the reason that makes the event of Opposition so rare."

While the remarkable astronomical event will see the red planet come in opposition to the Sun, it will also face opposition from the Earth at about 57 million miles.

Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, will only be slightly brighter than Mars as a lunar eclipse will make the planet appear shine more than usual.

Continuing to remain as bright through the rest of the month of April, the planet will be closest to earth and brightest on the night of April 14.

"While the naked eye will be able to spot the planet, binoculars will remarkably enhance its color and brightness," Delhi Daily News reported. "A telescope that is just four inches or larger will even show details of the surface of the planet and its polar caps."

"These opportunities only come about every two years. Most of the time, Mars is pretty darn far away", said Alan MacRobert, senior editor for Sky & Telescope magazine.

While it usually takes a fair amount of practice, a good telescope and cooperative atmosphere for anyone to clearly spot Mars, this rare opportunity provides amateurs and enthusiasts with an open invitation to view this live event.

This opposition occurs every 778 days, and you can view a live stream video feed of the 2014 Mars Opposition on the Slooh YouTube channel.
