Sailor Found Dead In Navy Barracks In Virginia

A sailor was found dead on Tuesday in the barracks of a Navy facility in Virginia, the Washington Post reported.

According to a U.S. Navy news release, the sailor was found at Naval Support Activity Portsmouth Annex. He was reportedly discovered following reports of gunfire, prompting a "code white" and emergency personnel to arrive.

Shortly after the incident unfolded, the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth was placed on lockdown for 15 minutes but have since been reopened.

An unidentified source reportedly told WAVY-TV the sailor's death was a suicide, but officials have not confirmed that allegation.

The name of the sailor has not been released and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service is currently investigating the sailor's death.

The barracks house junior enlisted sailors, some of which worked at the medical center, according to the Virginian-Pilot.

This is the second active shooter call to occur at a Navy base in the area. In March, Master-at-Arms Mark Mayo was killed by a man who tried to board the USS Mahan at Naval Station Norfolk.

The Navy's surgeon general, Vice Adm. Matthew Nathan, is at the center for a change of command ceremony scheduled for Tuesday at 11 a.m. Rear Adm. Terry J. Moulton will take over command from Rear Adm. Elaine C. Wagner, who has commanded the medical center since September 2011.
