California High School Students Arrested After Vicious Fight in Santa Monica Classroom, Police Say One Teen Brought Marijuana, Box Cutter to Campus

Two California high school students who were caught fighting with their teacher in the classroom on video have been arrested.

According to a report by Los Angeles Weekly, police reported one of the Santa Monica High School students had marijuana and a box cutter on his person on the day that he and science teacher Mark Black brawled in class.

A spokesperson from the District Attorney's office said charges have not yet been filed against the two teens.

Sgt. Jay Moroso of the Santa Monica Police Department said one of the boys, an 18-year-old seen on video fighting with Black, should be hit with threatening a school official, battery against a school employee, possession of a weapon on a school campus and possession of marijuana on school grounds when he's charged.

A 16-year-old was also arrested, LA Weekly reported.

Multiple students in the room took video footage of Monday's fight between the student and Black, who also works as a wrestling coach at the Los Angeles high school.

Some speculated at the time that the fight was drug-related.

Student Kylan Townsend told My Fox LA that the brawl broke out after a disagreement took place in the classroom.

"The guy was selling drugs and the teacher told him to stop and he didn't stop," Townsend recalled. "So I guess they started fighting...and then he closed the door."

Superintendent of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Sandra Lyon issued an official statement to students' parents on Friday, describing the events shown in the videos as "utterly alarming."

"A deeply disturbing incident involving a teacher and student occurred in a classroom at Santa Monica High School...Until the investigation is complete, we will not have all the details that led up to this incident; nevertheless, based on what I have viewed...I have placed the teacher on leave, pending the outcome of an independent investigation," she wrote.
