Apple’s iOS7 OS is powering 87 percent of iPhones and iPads visiting iTunes Store as of April 6.
Apple's latest mobile operating system has captured a major share of the market compared to its previous OS versions. Apple's latest App Store statistics for a seven day period ending April 6 reveals iOS7 accounts for most iPhone and iPad devices accessing iTunes Store. The percentage of iOS7 share has increased since March to 87 percent, while iOS6 holds 11 percent of App Store access and the older versions take just two percent.
The Cupertino tech giant announced iOS7 in September last year and in just one week, the latest platform was found on 52 percent of the devices. The graph consistently went upward: 74.1 percent in December, 78 percent in January and 83 percent as of March. At the current pace, Apple's mobile OS is likely to cross the 90 percent-mark by June, when reports suggest the iOS8 will be first showcased at WWDC 2014, ZDNet reports.
Apple's adoption rate for the latest mobile OS is faster than Google's Android.
According to the Internet giant's statistics, for a seven-day period ending April 1, Android KitKat is found on least number of devices accessing Play Store, after Froyo (1.1 percent) and Honeycomb (0.1 percent). The most popular Android OS is Jelly Bean, which accounts for 61.4 percent, compared to KitKat's 5.3 percent. Ice Cream Sandwich is still holding on to 14.3 percent of the Android share, but has significantly dropped since December when the OS was found on 18.6 percent.
There are several reasons why Android adoption is much slower than that of Apple's mobile operating systems. For one, Google rolls out its latest updates partially, starting with its own device line and the Google Play Edition smartphones. Then the OS is distributed to other smartphone makers in a random fashion, but closest partners to Google get the updates first, Besides, carriers and manufacturers delay the roll out of latest updates in order to make them compatible with respective handsets.
As for Apple, the update roll-out is universal. Compatible devices can instantly download the latest update once it is pushed to the handsets with no involvement of the carriers. This spikes the adoption rate of iOS platform, compared to Android.
A report from Mixpanel analytics firm gives a breakdown of the iOS7 adoption rate. The graph shows adoption of the first update to iOS7 is increasing at an impressive pace. The iOS7.1 update already accounts for 59 percent of iOS7 devices, up from 21 percent last month.
