The absence of Tiger Woods helps make the 2014 Masters more of an open field. With Woods sidelined after electing to undergo back surgery, names such as McIlroy, Scott and Mickelson become early favorites to win.
While the three aforementioned golfers have played Augusta before, there's the very real possibility a lesser-known name could walk away after the weekend with the title.
"You've got guys that are coming here for the first time, like Patrick Reed or Jordan Spieth, that I'm playing with the first two rounds," McIlroy told the tournament's website, "and they are going to stand on the first tee Thursday and think, 'I've got a great shot at winning this tournament.'"
Scott, last year's winner, also believes the field is wide open.
"In the past, certainly it's been easy to go to events and look at a guy who is the guy to beat," said Scott. "I think that scope has kind of broadened now. There are a lot of guys with talent and form that aren't necessarily standing out above others, but on their week, they are going to be tough to beat.
"There's probably a list of 20 guys you could go through here, if they play well they are going to be there on Sunday at some point. That's how I see this week. I'd like to think my name is one of those."
