One child was killed and 14 others were injured after a man crashed into a day care center in Florida on Wednesday, the Washington Post reported.
Now authorities are seeking the public's help in finding Robert Alex Corchado, 26, who they initially referred to as a "person of interest" after the crash but said on Thursday that he is responsible.
Wanda Diaz, a spokeswoman for the Florida Highway Patrol, said Corchado -- who has been arrested eight times since 2000 -- was driving a Dogde Durango that struck a convertible, which hopped the curb and crashed into the day care near Orlando.
One girl died and 14 others, mostly children, were injured. The driver of the convertible was not injured.
Investigators believed Corchado may have headed to Orlando International Airport in an attempt to flee, the Post said.
Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs called the crash a "absolute tragedy and disaster."
A call made to a number listed for Robert Alex Corchado by an AP reporter was answered, but the person hung up after the reporter asked to speak with Corchado.
His most recent arrest, in December, was for a misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene of an accident involving damage, a felony charge of selling narcotics, and felony marijuana possession. Corchado pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released of $10,000 bond.
Corchado's attorney, Jack Kaleita, did not return a call from the AP to comment.
The girl who died from her injuries was pronounced dead at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, but further details on her specific injuries were not released. One child remained in critical condition on Thursday, and three others were in serious condition, spokeswoman Katie Dagenais told the AP.
In total, 11 of the people injured were children, said John Mulhall, a spokesman for the Orange County Fire Rescue.
