2-Year-Old Boy In South Bend Fatally Shot On Front Yard

A two-year-old boy in South Bend, Indiana was fatally shot on Wednesday in his relative's front yard, the Associated Press reported.

The shooting occurred at 6:30 p.m. near a home close to the University of Notre Dame. The boy, identified as John Swoveland Jr., was playing outside with his older sister when he was shot in the chest, St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit Lt. David Wells told the AP.

No arrests have been made in the case.

Wells said authorities are investigating if the boy's death is related to earlier reports of gunfire from the same area that day. They are still unsure if he was a target or struck by a stray bullet.

Deputy Coroner Nancy Pemberton said an autopsy is scheduled for Thursday, according to the Kokomo Tribune.

According to relatives, the boy and his seven-year-old sister were visiting their aunt.

In Philadelphia, a two-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his older sister on Saturday.

Jamara Stevens, 11, was playing with her siblings when her younger brother began playing with a firearm that his mother's boyfriend left behind.

After pointing the gun her away, it discharged and shot her in the shoulder. Officials at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia told NBC News the bullet traveled to her chest and struck her heart.
