Two Ohio residents were shot on Thursday afternoon, after a gunman opened fire on an elementary school campus in Columbus' southeast side.
A 14-year-old boy was reportedly one of the two victims struck by bullets on Liberty Elementary School grounds, NBC's local station in the area reported this week.
The shooting happened at around 3:38 p.m. in front of Liberty, located on Whitlow Road. An unidentified suspect opened fire in the middle of the street, while teachers and school administrators dismissed students inside the school.
Law enforcement officials immediately transferred the 14-year-old victim to Nationwide Children's Hospital after the shooting. He is said to be in critical condition.
A 20-year-old who was also shot was sent to Grant Medical Center. Officials told NBC that the victim is currently stable.
Following an initial investigation, Columbus police stated that both the wounded citizens were hit in the legs.
Authorities do not yet have a suspect, nor has anyone been taken into police custody. Officers are reportedly interrogating eyewitnesses.
Although school ended at 3:30 p.m. at Liberty, some students were still on campus during the time of the shooting. Columbus City Schools representative Jeff Warner said a temporary lockdown was issued minutes after shots were first fired. The students who were still on Liberty grounds were escorted inside the building.
CCS officials told NBC that the lockdown at Liberty Elementary was lifted at around 4:45 p.m. Students were instructed to wait for parents on the corner of Whitlow and Quincy. Those who walked to school that day were held inside the school until a guardian arrived to take them home.
Independence High School nearby had already excused its students at the time of the shooting. Any students still on campus by 4 p.m. riding public transportation or driving home were dismissed.
