Twitter announced a new feature that will bring real-time pop-up notifications to engage users in instant tweets with others.
Twitter is revamping its service big time. First with a massive redesign of the profile pages and now with the addition of a new feature that enables seamless user-engagement. In an announcement made on the company's official blog Thursday, Twitter said the web version of the micro-blogging service will get real-time pop-up notifications when other users interact with your tweets.
Twitter is looking to improve its user-base by any means necessary, even if that means copying Facebook's UI. The micro-blogging service wa s pioneer in bringing real-time conversations in the form of tweets. Be it a live concert, a football match, or a TV show, users turn to Twitter to share their views instantly and start conversations with people of similar interest. The latest addition of push notification is just an add-on to that engaging behavior that does not let users miss out on any conversations.
"When you're logged in on twitter.com, you will receive notifications if someone has replied, favorited or retweeted one of your Tweets," Twitter's Michael Ducker (@miradu) wrote in the company's blog, Thursday. "You can also receive notifications for direct messages and new followers."
A report from Mashable said the notifications will appear in the lower-right hand corner of the user's timeline, regardless of which page they are in. Additionally, the pop-up window will disappear once the user replies to a DM or a tweet. This can boost the DM (direct message) feature that has least dominance across the social network compared to the 140 character tweets.
In a response tweet to one of a query on the new change, Ducker said the pop-up notifications will fade-away after a few seconds.
The notifications are fully interactive, which means users can follow others, reply to a message, retweet and favorite without leaving the current page, Twitter said.
Twitter is not forcing the update on its users like it did with the web redesign that is applicable to all users in the coming weeks. Twitter settings will allow users to turn off the notifications or select pop-ups for particular actions on the site such as being followed by a new user, retweeted tweets, favorited tweets, or getting replies or DM's from other users.
