The past month has seen 13 shooting incidents on major roads and highways around Kansas City, Mo., prompting the police to warn motorists to remain vigilant, CNN reported.
Drivers are nervous and rattled, CNN affiliate KCTV reported.
"Every time I pass a driver, we are both looking at one another, as we are all on the defense with the recent shootings," Amanda Fuller said in a Facebook post on the city Police Department's website. She said she drives the Interstate 435-470 corridor, where most of the shootings have occurred.
"It saddens me and it is a shame."
Between March 8 and April 6, 13 incidents have occurred on major highways and roads around the city, police said.
The perpetrator behind the shootings is being searched for by local and federal authorities, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
With the driver or front passenger door being the main targets in most of the cars, three people have been shot. However, no life-threatening injuries were suffered by the victims.
"Ten of the reported shootings were in Kansas City, and there's been one each in nearby Blue Springs, Leawood and Lee's Summit," CNN reported. "Police are also looking into other claims to see if they should be added to the total. Some of those reports were for incidents before March 8, police said."
Although no shooting has been reported since Sunday night, police are on the alert and are increasing their presence in areas where the shootings have occurred.
"I have seen upwards of six cruisers on my evening drive, and those are just the ones that have been obvious," according to a post from Jennifer Mason on the police Facebook page. The increased presence of the police made her feel safer, she said.
The police will be able to eventually catch the shooter, most residents said.
"It's not going to change my life." Kansas City BP service manager Chris Wilson said. "I still feel safe on the road. ... The police will probably catch whoever is behind these shootings."
Authorities are offering a $7,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case, CNN reported.
