'Rock Center' Canceled; Brian Williams to Stay On As NBC Nightly News Anchor

NBC’s Nightly News anchor Brian Williams has seen his newsmagazine “Rock Center” come to an end, according to the Christian Science Monitor.

According to NBC Universal News Group Chairwoman Pat Fili-Krushel, the final show will be on June 21.

Since its premiere in October 2011 it has struggled to gain a steady spot on NBC’s primetime schedule. The shows biggest moments were Bob Costas’ interview with Jerry Sandusky and the recent special done on the Boston Marathon bombings.

"While we're disappointed with the news, we are very proud of the hard work that the 'Rock Center' team put into the program each week," Fili-Krushel said in a memo.

While the network’s news division is in charge of what goes on the show, the entertainment division decides where the show goes on the schedule.

The show has hopped all over the NBC schedule. It has aired on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. It currently airs on Friday.

"Just when you think somebody might figure out when it's on and want to see it the next week, they move it to another place," Ted Koppel, who occasionally does stories for the show, said in an interview with the Associated Press in March. "That's not helpful, and I think Brian deserves more support than that."

Williams issued a statement to the New York Times:

"I'm so proud of the work we did," Williams said. "Our people got shot at for this broadcast. They pulled countless all-nighters. They investigated, cajoled, hustled and cared deeply. They won awards, won the respect of their colleagues and produced great television journalism."
