A judge set bail at $100,000 for a man who caused a crash involving a Florida day care center, killing a 4-year-old girl and injuring 14 others, NBCNews.com reported.
In a hearing on Monday morning, prosecutors tried to raise bail for Robert Corchado, 28, to $250,000. On Thursday, Corchado turned himself into authorities one day after crashing into a convertible, causing it to crash through a KinderCare in Winter Park.
Prosecutor Lisa Gong Guerrero argued Corchado was a flight risk considering he went missing for 24 hours after the crash, noting he rented a car on the same day.
"What are you going to rent a car for, but to flee?" Guerrero said in court.
Florida Highway Patrol Cpl. Brian Gensler agreed with prosecutors, telling the court he saw Corchado as "a severe threat to flee the country," according to the Orlando Sentinel.
His defense attorney, Daniel Tumarkin, argued for a $7,500 bail and said Corchado was not a risk.
"On the contrary, he turned himself in to the Orange County Jail," he said.
According to NBC, he testified in short answers and said he has three young children -- a 9-month-old, 3-year-old, and 5-year-old. The judge said he must stay in central Florida and is prohibited to drive if he is released on bail.
If he is released, he will likely be arrested on violating probation charges in Seminole County, NBC said.
Corchado has a lengthy list of previous criminal activity, with a total of eight arrests since 2000.
His most recent arrest, in December, was for a misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene of an accident involving damage, a felony charge of selling narcotics, and felony marijuana possession. Corchado pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released of $10,000 bond.
