Samsung's launch of an early successor to Galaxy S4 is ready to take on the lost market with impressive first day sales, double that of S4 in some markets.
Samsung, the world leader in the smartphone making business, can rest easy about worries surrounding the Galaxy S5, as various media sources confirm record sales of the latest Galaxy variant in global markets on launch day. According to Korea's ZDNet, the opening sales of the Galaxy S5 on April 11 were higher than S4's first-day sales last year. In fact, the report adds that in some regions, Samsung Galaxy S5 sales were double its predecessor, Mashable reports.
The Galaxy S5's first step in the market has turned in Samsung's favor, despite tech enthusiasts and analysts predicting otherwise. The Korean electronics company unveiled the flagship Galaxy S5 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Feb. 24. The handset was launched in 125 countries Friday, and the company signed contracts with top carriers in the U.S. including Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular.
Samsung relied on the S5 sales, as it was a deciding factor for the company's future in the business after sluggish sales of the Galaxy S4. Chinese smartphone makers have grown famous among the budget conscious consumers, but Samsung has not lost its charm on a global level, which is proved once again by impressive opening sales of the S5.
"Samsung's smartphone business has been faring well since the introduction of the first Galaxy mobile phone. The S5 will be a major turning point for Samsung's mobile business. That's why Shin Jong-kyun, the company's mobile chief himself, checks sales figures and stock movements," a senior Samsung executive told The Korea Times.
Samsung did not confirm the number of sold inventory, but ZDNet Korea quoted a spokesperson saying the sales were in millions. The report added that the Galaxy S5 was sold out in various global markets with strong sales in emerging markets such as India.
While the official confirmation is yet due by the smartphone maker, Samsung Galaxy S4 topped 10 million sales in one month and the Galaxy S3 took about 50 days to achieve the milestone. With the current selling rate, the Galaxy S4 is bound to surpass the 10 million-mark sooner, setting a new record for the company.
The news of record-breaking sales comes at a crucial time for Samsung, as its hands are full with legal controversies. Apple is seeking $2.2 billion from the Korean smartphone maker for violating five of its smartphone patents. Samsung, on the other hand, is trying hard to fight the claim and has sought help from Google to justify its claims.
