Deputy Shot During Traffic Stop In Minnesota; Suspect Arrested

A suspect was arrested after shooting a deputy during a traffic stop in Minnesota on Tuesday, the West Central Tribune reported.

According to Clay County Sheriff Bill Bergquist, the arrest took place close to where the shooting occurred at 10:40 a.m., nearly two hours after the incident began.

Around 8:30 a.m., a Norman County Deputy made a traffic stop on County Road 39 near Perley. At one point during the stop, the driver and deputy exchanged gunfire and the deputy was injured.

The deputy, whose name has not been released, was transported to a hospital in Fargo, Bergquist said. He was wearing a bullet proof vest and is expected to be OK, CBS News said.

Citing an ongoing investigation, Norman County Sheriff's Department did not provide further details on the shooting.

Following the incident, a lockdown was issued at Norman County West Elementary School, though it was lifted after word of the arrest.

Several other facilities were also placed on lockdown in Norman County, including Benedictine Living Community in Ada and Bridges Medical Center, according to Tyler Huemberg, administrator and CEO at Benedictine Living Community.

The name of the suspect has not been released and it is unknown what led to the traffic stop.
