Google's one-day Google Glass sale was a major success with the "Cotton" version selling out in just a couple of hours.
Google managed to get a lot of attention for its much-hyped computer tech eyewear. Earlier this week, the Internet giant announced a one-day Google Glass sale. The news got several tech-savvy resident of the U.S. hyped up about the first opportunity to get the Glass without Google's invitation to join the Explorer program. The new method of approach seemed to have paid off as the company revealed that within a few hours of the sale going live, it's "Cotton" white version was sold out.
"Wow, what a morning! We're happy to see so many new faces (and frames) in the Explorer Program," the Google Glass team wrote on its Google+ page, Tuesday. "Just a quick update that -- ack -- we've sold out of Cotton (white), so things are moving really fast."
This was the first time ever that U.S. citizens were given an opportunity to buy Google's computer-enabled eyeglass. The Google Glass Explorer Edition was presented on sale for the regular price tag of $1,500. To sweeten the deal, Google also added a free accessory, like frames or shades.
Prior to the sale only developers had access to Google Glass, with only a few of them owning a piece. The expansion of the Explorer program is the first step towards making Glass available to everyone by the end of this year.
Google initially started taking pre-orders for its eyewear two years ago at Google I/O 2012, which shipped out the Glass to the first batch of 2,000 Explorers. Later that year, the web giant started offering consumers a chance to buy the pricey eyewear by letting Google know what they would do with Glass via #ifihadglass, which got 8,000 people with their own pair. Other smaller promotions, like friend referrals and official waitlist to become an Explorer, were started last year, but the latest promotion is probably the last major effort to give its developers a heads up before the official launch later this year.
As of this writing, Google says all spots for the Glass are booked.
"We're out of spots in the Explorer Program for now, but may have more to share soon," the message reads. The message has been conveyed to all interested buyers from the official Google Glass G+ account and Twitter account as well.
