Authorities in Denver are investigating if a 911 call was handled properly after a woman was fatally shot by her husband after staying on the line for 13 minutes, FoxNews.com reported.
The incident began on Monday after Kristine Kirk's husband, Richard, started talking about the end of the world and asked her to shoot him. When she refused, he shot her.
"Any time a person dies while communicating with Denver's emergency services, we examine the circumstances to ensure that the incident was handled properly and we look for areas to improve upon," police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.
Sources told KDVR.com that Richard Kirk may have ingested edible marijuana before the incident. He has no criminal history.
Jackson added officials are "looking at their possibly being a marijuana aspect to this particular investigation."
One source said one of their kids may have witnessed the shooting.
"My heart goes out to those three boys and Kris' family. Mom, dad, sister and brothers. This is a terrible thing," said Lance Kirk, Richard's brother.
"I know that wasn't Richard," Lance Kirk added. "Let's just say that. I hope there are some answers that come out about this."
Neighbors described the Kirks as a loving family.
"Whatever those boys are going through right now, my thoughts and my prayers are with them and I hope that they find peace," neighbor Kristin Fynewever said.
Richard Kirk is due in court on Wednesday at 10 a.m.
