LAX Temporarily Evacuated After False Bomb Threat; Man In Custody

A man was taken into custody and is undergoing a mental evaluation after lying about having a bomb in his bag at Los Angeles International Airport on Thursday, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The incident occurred around 7:40 a.m. after the man -- who has not been identified -- told the ticketing counter he had a bomb. After Terminal 7 was evacuated, the Los Angeles Police arrived and cleared the bag by 8:45 a.m., the Times said.

Sgt. Belinda Nettles, a police spokeswoman, said the man was transported to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center for a a 72-hour examination.

Terminal 7 is used by United Airlines and United Express, according to the Kansas City Star. It is unknown if any flights were delayed due to the scare.

LAX has experienced a series of frightening incidents within the past six months.

In October, several dry ice bombs were planted in an airport bathroom and plane tarmac. Dicarlo Bennet, a 28-year-old Servisair employee, was eventually charged for the bombs.

One month later, Paul Ciancia opened fire in the airport, killing a TSA agent and injuring three others.

Officials say Ciancia, a New Jersey native who had recently moved to Los Angeles, was fed up with the way airports were patrolled and gave insight to his anger is a written letter, where he wrote about a deliberate plan to kill Transportation Security Administration agents and "instill fear in your traitorous minds."

Once the shooting ended, officials discovered the letter in his duffel bag where he proclaimed himself to be a "pissed off patriot" for believing his constitutional rights were being violated and bragged about "how easy it is to get a gun into the airport."
