NBA analyst Steve Kerr reportedly "absolutely expects" to be offered the New York Knicks coaching job and plans to accept it. Soon-to-be free agent Pau Gasol, meanwhile, could reunite with Knicks president Phil Jackson in free agency this summer.
The fate of Knicks coach Mike Woodson will be decided soon. Woodson is expected to speak with Jackson on Friday about his future with the team, according to ESPN's Nick Borges, and will likely be let go.
Kerr, who played for the Chicago Bulls under Jackson and understands the triangle offense, has been mentioned for months as a possible successor to Woodson. George Willis of the New York Post reports it's likely to happen.
"According to a source close to the situation, Kerr 'absolutely expects' to be offered the job," Willis wrote on Friday. "'And if he's offered the job, he's definitely going to do it,' the source told The Post.
"The Post has learned Kerr has had conversations with his bosses at Turner Sports about adjusting his schedule as an analyst during the upcoming playoffs should he be named the Knicks' head coach."
Gasol, meanwhile, could be another former pupil of Jackson's headed to New York. The 7-footer hasn't flourished in Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni's offense, and with his contract expiring after the season, he isn't expected to re-sign with Los Angeles if D'Antoni is still in place.
"The Knicks would be interested in Gasol in free agency, a source said," Yahoo Sports' Marc J. Spears wrote on Thursday. "... With the Knicks expected to play Jackson's triangle offense and more of a half-court, such a style of play could be attractive to Gasol."
Spears also noted Gasol would have to take a huge pay cut to reunite with his former coach in New York.
