Tennis Player Drowns: University Of Oregon's Alex Rovello Death Not Linked to Alcohol

University of Oregon tennis player Alex Rovello drowned on Saturday after diving from a 60-foot waterfall.

The accident occurred after the 21-year-old leapt from the 60-foot waterfall into the McKenzie River, according to IB Times. Rovello drowned after hitting the river face-first. Friends and bystanders tried to rescue the college athlete, but were hindered by the depth and frigidness of the water. One witness ran for more than two miles to obtain cell phone reception and dial 911.

Rovello dove from the area known as Tamolitch Falls into the river's "Blue Pool." The depth of the water in that area is over 30 feet deep, and the temperature of the water was in the mid-30s.

Linn County police do not believe alcohol was involved.

"Everyone loved him and he was just always so nice," a classmate told the Oregonian. "He could light up a room with his smile."

Rovello, a Portland native, finished last season at Oregon with a 21-8 singles record.

"The Oregon tennis family is devastated by the loss of Alex," University of Oregon tennis coach Nils Schyllander said. "He was an amazing person and teammate and his spirit will live on forever with all of us who were fortunate enough to have known him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his parents, Geri and Jim Rovello, and to the entire family."

A memorial service is planned for Saturday.
