5 Children Injured In Chicago Shooting On Easter Sunday

One shooting left five children injured in Chicago on Sunday, adding to the 31 others that were victims of gun violence over the weekend.

According to the Chicago Tribune, at least nine people were killed and 36 wounded since Friday.

Around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, five children -- ages 11 to 15 -- were shot by someone driving in a car in the city's South Side, police said.

The kids were walking home after playing in a nearby park when the vehicle approached them. The driver allegedly asked them if they were in a gang.

One relative claimed one of the kids said they were not affiliated with a gang and another said the driver opened fire before any of them could answer. The gunman hit four girls and one boy, the Tribune said.

The youngest child, 11-year-old Tymisha Washington, was the most seriously injured and transported to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County in critical condition.

Tymisha, who had hours earlier celebrated Easter with her family, was struck by two bullets -- one that hit her chin and the other that punctured her lung and broke her collarbone, according to her parents.

"She says she's ready to go home," said the girl's father, 29-year-old Cory Lesser. "She's tired of the doctors poking her with needles."

Another victim at Stoger Hospital was a 15-year-old girl shot in the arm, who police said was in stable condition.

A 14-year-old girl and 14-year-boy were taken to Comer Children's Hospital after the shooting occurred. The girl was shot in the abdomen and listed in serious condition and the boy was shot in the leg and listed in stable condition.

The fifth victim, a 15-year-old girl grazed in the buttocks, was transported to St. Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center for treatment.
