The St. Louis Rams appear uncertain whether Sam Bradford can be a franchise quarterback and may select a signal caller in the 2014 NFL draft. Among the quarterbacks St. Louis is reportedly eying are Pittsburgh's Tom Savage, Georgia's Aaron Murray and South Carolina's Connor Shaw.
Bradford, the first overall pick of the 2010 draft, hasn't lived up to expectations. Although he enjoyed a strong rookie season, injuries have since forced him to miss 15 games over the last three seasons. His latest injury -- an ACL tear -- limited him to just seven games in 2013.
Concerns about his durability have the Rams questioning whether Bradford can be their long-term franchise quarterback. St. Louis, unwilling to waste another season if Bradford isn't 100 percent or is injured again, reportedly wants to select a quarterback in the upcoming draft.
"The consistent signal from Rams Park is that the team wants to take a quarterback in the mid-rounds, someone who isn't a project and could compete for a starting job in a year or two," Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch wrote on Monday.
NFL.com draft analyst Gil Brandt also believes St. Louis will draft a quarterback.
"I don't think there's any question the Rams are taking a quarterback," Brandt said, via The Post-Dispatch. "(General manager) Les Snead has been around looking at those guys."
St. Louis has "spent a lot of time" with Savage and Shaw, Thomas reported. They also attended the pro days of Murray and SMU's Garrett Gilbert and either met with or worked out Carr.
Other possible targets include Clemson's Tajh Boyd, San Jose State's David Fales, Eastern Illinois' Jimmy Garoppolo, Alabama's AJ McCarron and LSU's Zach Mettenberger, according to Thomas.
The Rams hold the No. 2 and No. 13 picks. Snead admitted he'd be willing to trade down in the first round, and with reports indicating the stock of the quarterback draft class is falling, he could likely find a steal in the second or third round.
