The Phoenix Suns are interested in trading picks in the 2014 NBA draft. Phoenix, content with the amount of youth on their roster, hopes they can put together a trade package with some or all of their three first round picks and land a star.
Phoenix, as of now, owns the 14th, 18th and 27th picks in the upcoming draft and is looking to put together a package of picks to trade for a star, or at least a veteran, according to Suns general manager Ryan McDonough.
"Our preference would be, as I said when I arrived, to trade for a star if we can do that." McDonough said on Friday during his exit interview, via ArizonaSports.com. "We feel like we've traded for some pretty good players in Eric (Bledsoe) and Miles (Plumlee). Gerald Green also played a big role for us this year. But, we're going to continue to explore the trade market.
"I think, though, if we go in with the 14th, the 18th and 27th pick, that it's unlikely we draft three guys and bring them to the Suns. The options are packaging them for a veteran player, packaging them to move up, we could draft a European player or two and leave them overseas or we could trade our pick for future picks and spread them out."
The draft lottery on May 20 will officially determine which picks Phoenix goes into the draft with. They picked up the No. 18 and No. 27 picks from trades with the Indiana Pacers and Washington Wizards.
McDonough will likely look to upgrade at the small forward position, according to Nick Borges of ESPN. If the Suns find a trade partner, they shouldn't have a problem absorbing the player's contract -- Phoenix has only $23.6 million on the books for next season.
