NYC Mayor de Blasio To Mark May 16 As 'Barbara Walters Day' (VIDEO)

During an appearance on "The View," New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced his plan to make May 16 "Barbara Walters Day" in the city, the Associated Press reported.

The mayor was on the show Monday with his wife, Chirlane McCray, when he made the announcement to Walters, 84, who he called a "living legend" who has "done so much for New York City."

De Blasio picked the date because it will be Walters' last day working -- marking the end of decades of reporting and anchoring -- and handed her an official city proclamation.

Though their conversation avoided politics for the most part, de Blasio and McCray discussed some of the challenges as an interracial couple.

On May 15, all 11 past and present show hosts will join together to salute the end of Walters' career. Past co-hosts Meredith Vieira, Star Jones, Joy Behar, Debbie Matenopoulos, Lisa Ling, Rosie O'Donnell, and Elisabeth Hasselbeck will join Sherri Shepherd, Jenny McCarthy, and Whoopi Goldberg to say goodbye to Walters.

"On #TheView, Mayor @BilldeBlasio declares May 16 "Barbara Walters Day" in New York City. Congratulations, @BarbaraJWalters!" the NYC Mayor's Office tweeted.

The only original co-host announced her looming departure from the show last year -- 17 years after creating it.
