Indiana's late-season woes followed them into the postseason. The No. 1 seed fell to No. 8 Atlanta on Saturday, 101-93. Pacers center Roy Hibbert managed only 12 points and three rebounds, and the Pacers' defense could not contain Hawks guard Jeff Teague and forward Paul Millsap, who both combined for 53 points.
"It's frustrating. It's frustrating, but it's a long series," Pacers star Paul George told the Associated Press after the loss. "It's just one game and that's the way we have to look at it."
For Atlanta, taking the first game in Indiana was huge.
"I think getting off to such a good start against such a good team is important," Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said. "It's really not something we talked about. They're the No. 1 seed for a reason."
Atlanta struggled to stay in playoff contention throughout the season, but they rolled into the postseason with momentum after winning four of their last five regular-season games.
Tuesday's game is almost a must-win for the struggling Pacers. Heading into Atlanta with a 2-0 deficit could prove insurmountable, given the team's poor finish to the regular season. If the Pacers find themselves out of the playoffs after the first round, changes are likely to come in Indiana.
