A total of 15 cities received a "Request for Proposal" on Monday from the Democratic National Committee to host their convention in 2016.
According to CNN, Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Miami, Nashville, New York, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, and Salt Lake City have until June 6 to return their RFPs.
However, the cities must prove their ability to be the right choice in a number of ways. While hosting the DNC or RNC conventions can provide an economic boost, it requires a lot of fundraising, plenty of space, and security.
Two of the cities in the running for the DNC convention -- Cleveland and Las Vegas -- are also contenders to hold the RNC convention.
The DNC will likely announce the winner in late 2014 or early 2015, POLITICO said. The RNC has already narrowed down their options to six cities -- Las Vegas, Dallas, Kansas City, Cincinnati, and Cleveland -- and will announce the winner in late summer or early fall of this year.
Last week, RNC officials traveled to Denver in their first of six contender visits.
"We've entered the next phase of the site-selection process with all cities on an even playing field - there are no favorites, there are no underdogs," Site Selection Committee Chairwoman Enid Mickelsen said in a statement. "The technical visits will help aid the committee in their decision-making process."
By April 30, the RNC will have visited all six cities.
"(These initial visits are) an added step because the quality of the bids was so good that we didn't want to cut down the finalists too much," RNC spokesman Ryan Mahoney told the Denver Post.
