NASA Global Selfie Event: Earth Day Celebration Goes Big For 2014

Everyone is invited to take part in NASA's #GlobalSelfie event for this year's celebration of Earth Day.

NASA Earth Science is going big in 2014 with the launch of five missions designed to gather critical data about our planet and to mark this eventful year for Earth Science.

The space agency has urged everyone to take part and help with their Earth Right Now campaign on Earth Day by taking a "selfie" - a picture of oneself - and posting it on any social media platform using the hashtag #GlobalSelfie.

According to a press release by the agency, the idea of the event is to essentially build a new "Blue Marble" from the individual images tagged with the #GlobalSelfie hashtag. This will create an image of the Earth from the bottom up, rather than what NASA usually does to generate the image - snapping a shot of earth from space. Participants can take a picture to showcase any of earth's natural formations - from parks, rivers and mountains, to fields, streams and forests - by posting pictures on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Google+, or Flickr. Don't forget to use the hashtag #GlobalSelfie.

In recent years, NASA scientists have identified a wealth of new planets, but no other celestial body has been more closely studied than planet earth.

NASA observes and studies all of the Earth's complexities through the help of 17 Earth-observing missions - this number is expected to increase this year.

These satellites usually produce images that form the scientific image of the Earth. But for this year's Earth Day, there will be a different image - one that has been crowd-sourced from all over the planet; a collection of snapshots that will create a uniquely different image of the Earth.
