Police in South Carolina arrested a woman Monday for wrapping her newborn son in a plastic bag and throwing him in a trash can.
Sharon Ferguson, 28-year-old resident of Greenville was charged with attempted murder and wilful neglect. The baby was found in the dustbin by her neighbour who called 911.
According to the Greenville police, the neighbour was checking on the house he owns on Chaney Street in the Nicholtown community and noticed a trail of blood. Police documents show that baby was covered in a plastic grocery bag that was wrapped in a pink blanket.
"We found what looked to be blood outside of a trash can, and a little bit on the ground," Officer Jonathan Bragg told WYFF. "At that point we started digging around and found the newborn inside the trash can."
The police warrant shows that Ferguson delivered the baby and in the neighbour's empty house and then abandoned the newborn outside trash bin in the back of the house. However, the baby was in a stable condition after EMS provided first aid.
Traci Fant, a family spokesperson, said Ferguson was diagnosed with a mental illness and was homeless. She added that Ferguson's family was not aware of her pregnancy.
Fant said she would appeal the lawyer to take back the attempted murder charge citing the case of a woman who abandoned a baby at the BI-LO Center three years ago and was not charged with attempted murder.
Ferguson was taken to the Greenville Detention Center where she was being held on $125,000 bond.
