FedEx Sued Over California Crash

A group of people including the mother of a 17-year-old student who died in a bus crash along with 10 others in northern California filed a lawsuit, Tuesday, against FedEx for negligence.

The lawsuit blamed FedEx as its trucks have a history of catching fire. Earlier this month, a FedEx tractor-trailer rammed into a bus on Interstate 5 north of Sacramento. The passengers in the bus were students from Los Angeles and were going north to tour Humboldt States University.

The accident killed 10 people including three adult chaperones and both drivers, reports the the Associated Press.

The suit for a $100 million was filed in the Los Angeles County Superior Court on behalf of Rosa Rivera, mother of Jennifer Bonilla of Los Angeles.

"She had her whole future before her," Aminpour said of Bonilla. "She was the first in her family to ever go to college, " reports the AP.

FedEx issued a statement saying that it was cooperating with the authorities involved in the investigation. "We remain focused on providing support to those affected and cooperating with the authorities as they conduct their investigation," FedEx said in a statement, Reuters reports citing City News Service. "This is not the time for us to discuss potential litigation."

According to the authorities, the initial investigation did not find any evidence of a pre-collision fire.

The suit names the estate of the FedEx driver who died in the crash and the bus owner, Silverado Stages, as defendants. It further alleges that the bus did not have enough exit doors to allow the passengers to escape the crash.
