While accepting an award at the Desert AIDS Project's Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards in 2012, actor Matt Bomer publicly came out as a gay man - now the "Magic Mike" actor has unveiled another secret he's kept quiet for three years.
In the May issue of Details magazine, Bomer revealed that he's married. The actor told the magazine that she has been married to partner Simon Halls for the past three years.
The 36-year-old actor talked to the magazine about his role in the upcoming film, "The Normal Heart," in which he plays a gay man dying of AIDS during the early days of the epidemic, according to Us Weekly. The actor credits author, Larry Kramer, for helping pave the road for gay rights. When hearing that there would be a film based off the book, Bomer told the magazine that he wanted to be involved in any way possible.
"I wouldn't have a lot of the rights I have today if it wasn't for people like Larry," Bomer told the magazine. "I just wanted to be involved with the project in some capacity. I didn't care what my part was."
Bomer countined: "On some level, Larry probably saved my life. He happened to be on set the day DOMA was overturned. In many ways, he's responsible for DOMA being overturned in the first place. He's an Abraham Lincoln figure - he has affected the cultural landscape of this country, and not always popularly."
Us Weekly reported that Bomer lost 40 pounds for his latest role with the help of doctors and a 14-day alkalized-water, juice, tea and enzyme cleanse. He also received help from "Magic Mike" co-star Matthew McConaughey, who lost 50 pounds to play an aids victim and activist in "Dallas Buyers Club".
"He called me and walked me through what he did," Bomer recalls of the Academy Award winner's help. "It was very generous, but I took a slightly different path."
The "White Collar" actor came out by thanking his family when accepting an award at the Desert AIDS Project's Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards in Palm Springs.
"I'd really especially like to thank my beautiful family: Simon, Kit, Walker, Henry," Bomer said. "Thank you for teaching me what unconditional love is. You will always be my proudest accomplishment. God bless you."
Bomer and Halls have three sons together - 6-year-old twins Walker and Henry, and 8-year-old Kit.
