Houston's defense struggled to contain Portland in Game 1. Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge scored a game-high 46 points and 18 rebounds, and second-year guard Damian Lillard added 31 points in Portland's 122-120 overtime win.
When Aldridge fouled out in overtime, Lillard took over and scored Portland's next five points, including a pair of free throws to put Portland up by one.
"When you've got your best player playing like that, it fires you up," Lillard told the Associated Press after the game. "When he went out of the game, I felt like our team ... had to have L.A.'s back and come through for him."
Trail Blazers center Joel Freeland closed out the game by making one of his two free throws.
Rockets stars Dwight Howard and James Harden led Houston's offense with 27 points apiece, but they struggled to connect on shots and combined for 17 of 49 from the field.
"I've got to play better," said Harden, who missed two shots in the final seconds of overtime. "I didn't shoot the ball well ... I've got to shake it off, but it will better in Game 2."
One adjustment Harden plans to make is to be more aggressive driving to the basket.
"I wasn't really driving and attacking and being aggressive like I needed to be," he said. "I think when I get into the attack mode everything else opens up, the assists come and the easy layups come and whatnot. So I've got to be more aggressive."
