Detroit Man, Mike Reda, Given Life Sentence In Retirement Home Shooting

A Detroit man was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday for killing two women at a retirement home last year.

Mike Reda, 67, fatally shot Deborah Socia, 59, and Maria Gonzalez, 61, at Pablo Davis Elder Living Center on Oct. 20, according to The Associated Press.

Earlier this month, a jury found him guilty on two counts of first-degree, premeditated murder and other crimes.

While handing down his sentence, Judge Cynthia Gray Hathaway called the crime a "horrible incident."

Reda, who has over two dozen grandchildren and great-grandchildren, said he was "sorry for what happened," The AP reported.

Reda reportedly told police he was intoxicated and full of rage when the incident occurred.

During questioning, he told authorities he dated a woman whom the victims befriended, keeping her away from him. He said he had been drinking Brandy and couldn't remember the whole day but mentioned approaching Socia and another resident, Paul Fratangelo, with an MP5 rifle.

He claimed his rifle discharged once "by accident," but then went to Gonzelez's apartment, kicked her door down, and shot her twice in the head.

"I didn't see the rifle until he got right on top of us," Fratangelo told The Detroit News in October. "I said 'Oh, my God ...' He said 'Get on the ground and start praying.'

"It was the grace of God that he didn't shoot me. I really thought he was going to shoot me. I thought it was over. Instead, he shot both my friends."

Will Staples, another resident at the center, said Reda's girlfriend was close with the victims.

"Everyone knows everyone in here, but they were all good friends," Staples said. "People called them the Three Musketeers."

Authorities said the ex-girlfriend was never one of the his targets.
