Summer Infant Baby Monitor Recall: Product's Cord Might Lead to Strangulation

Summer Infant has issued a voluntary recall for the company's audio and video baby monitors claiming their cords can strangle babies a minimum three feet from the babies crib according to recall information on the company's website.

The company wants the information to serve more as a notification about the dangers parents and infants could possibly encounter with the product.

"This is a consumer safety alert and awareness campaign aimed at educating consumers of potential strangulation issues with electric cords in the nursery when placed too close to a crib, bassinet, play yard, or other safe sleep environment," the company said in a statement on their website.

Summer Infant has subsequently provided additional safety material for users.

"As a part of this campaign, Summer Infant is providing a Safe Installation Guide, cord Warning Labels and additional Cord Wall-Mounting Security Clips to consumers free of charge," the company said in the statement. "Summer Infant would like to point out that a baby monitor with cord should NEVER be placed within three feet of a crib or baby's reach. Baby monitor cameras can be safely placed away from the crib and still operate as intended - to monitor a child while sleeping."

This also includes a informational packet entitled "Infants Can Strangle in Baby Monitor Cords Safety Alert Brochure."

According to the recall information, Summer Infant learned of seven deaths that stemmed from a cord wrapping around a user's neck. In most cases, the cord was too close to the child - not the required distance of three feet away, as the company suggests.

Consumers can obtain the labels and security clips at no cost by contacting Summer Infant's customer service at 1-800-426-8627, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. eastern standard time.

Information about how to safely install the products is available in a PDF download of the company's Safe Installation Guide.

According to CBS Miami, 800,000 of the product's rechargeable batteries are also being pulled back, because they can burn users.
