Woman Charged for Stealing Stuffed Toy from Child’s Grave

Ontario Police charged a woman for stealing a toy from a child's grave in Mansfield Memorial Park.

Video footage shows 54-year-old Frieda Kay Shade walking into the cemetery and taking away the stuffed toy duck. The video went viral on the Internet and TV news.

Shade then went to Ontario police Wednesday night and said that she took away the toy from 14-month-old Hayden 'Tank' Cole Sheridan, Saturday, because a dog was running at large in the area and wanted to prevent it from destroying the toy, reports the Associated Press.

According to Jon Sigler, an Ontario police detective, the video on their official Facebook page garnered over 2 million views in 48 hours.

"I mainly want to know why," Jaclyn Sheridan, the deceased baby's mother said, reports 3wkyc.com. "What gave you the right to think it was OK to do it? What made you do it? Why my son?" The family had left the toy on their child's grave as an Easter gift.

Items from Hayden's grave have been stolen before a few years back, the police said. A toy truck and solar-powered night lights were taken away. Since then the police installed a hidden camera, reports the New York Daily News. However, police could not confirm whether Shade was responsible for the other thefts.

Sheridan said that the family was glad that the woman was caught. "I think the only reason she turned herself in is because it was everywhere. I think there's no more hiding from it. I think if she could have, she would have kept hiding from it," she said.

"My son has been there seven years, and I've never seen a stray dog there," Sheridan said of Hayden who passed away in 2007. "She knew what she was doing when she took it."

Reports say that Shade's husband is also buried in Mansfield Memorial Park. She is scheduled to appear May 15 for the petty theft charge.
