Neil Patrick Harris summed up how he felt about the "How I Met Your Mother" finale and fans are probably not going to like what he has to say.
Harris explained to David Letterman on "The Late Show" why the ending is appropriate for the series. According to Harris, his character Barney Stinson growth on the show didn't mean he was ready to grow up once her married Robin.
"It wasn't necessarily the happy ending that people were expecting," Harris told Letterman. "But Carter [Bays] and Craig [Thomas], who were once writers on your show and the executive producers and creators, knew this ending years ago and had played towards that. And I was a big proponent of it and a big fan of it."
"Sometimes, people's growth doesn't really mean that they grow up," he added. "There are certain people who you want them to get into a solid relationship and really settle down and learn from things. And you want Barney to be the guy you can bring your mom home to - but Barney's the guy who wants to bang your mom."
Harris went on to explain there was a bigger reason why Ted Mosby's story of "How I Met Your Mother" was so long. The actor believed the show was the right balance of serious and funny.
"There's reason why [Ted] was pining for certain people on the show for so long," Harris said. "...As the show grew up and we grew up within the show, it ended in a more adult way. I think it was a nice, reflective, kind of sad but happy ending to a long, long story."
The actor added as people grow up, things happen. People die, people get sick, people start families and life's "endings" aren't usually tied up neatly. You can watch Harris' full explanation in the video below.
