A 10-year-old girl at the White House's 'Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day' Thursday, seized the opportunity and gave her unemployed father's resume to none other than Michelle Obama.
The First Lady called for a question-answer session in the East Room during the event. The girl, Charlotte Bell, raised her hand and gave Obama the resume. "My dad's been out of a job for three years and I wanted to give you his resume," Charlotte said, according to the abcNews. Obama was surprised and her instant reaction was "Oh my goodness."
The Associated Press reports that Obama explained to the other children, who might not have heard Charlotte's comment. "Well, it's a little private, but she's doing something for her dad, right?" the first lady said to the audience, children of the Executive Office employees. She also promised the girl that she will look into the matter and hugged the girl. Before leaving, Obama made sure she took the resume with her.
Ben Bell, Charlotte's father has been unemployed almost three years. He worked on the Obama campaign in 2012, according to theNew York Daily News.
The Bell family says that they had joked over the weekend about asking Obama for a job. However, they did not know she would actually do it, her mother an executive branch employee said.
The White House did not comment on the incident.
During the event, Obama also shared her experiences in the White House. She was asked if she missed her old job as a lawyer.
I think this is a pretty cool job," she told a boy called Thomas, reports The Telegraph. "But sometimes I miss like a normal life, right? Without security guards. Sometimes I miss being able to walk out the door and go wherever I want to whenever I want to. Sometimes I miss, walking around where nobody even cares whether you're there, right?"
