Virginia Fugitive, Shawn A. Sykes, Shot By Rhode Island Police

A wanted fugitive from Virginia was shot by police in Rhode Island during a traffic stop on Saturday, the Washington Post reported.

The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. when officers attempted to pull over a driver suspected of a DUI.

Shawn A. Sykes, 26, was allegedly carrying a gun and drugs when police tried to stop him. According to authorities, he refused to stop and eventually got out of his vehicle to point his gun at officers, prompting them to open fire.

Sykes -- wanted by authorities in Richmond, Virginia on sex offenses -- was shot in the arm.

After being treated at Rhode Island Hospital and released, Sykes was detained by Providence Police and is being held on felony assault, drug, and gun charges.

An investigation into the matter is being conducted by Providence Police, Cranston Police, Rhode Island State Police, and the Attorney General's Office.

On Sunday, it was not known if he had legal representation.

According to WLNE-TV, Sykes has a lengthy criminal resume including more drug and robbery charges.

The last time a police officer shot someone was in 2008, according to The Providence Journal. Officer David Jubenville opened fire at a man who drove into his car, and the attorney general's office determined the shooting was justified.
