FreedomPop has extended its free service plans to Apple's iOS-based devices on Sprint's network and is directly offering refurbished iPhone 5 for $349.
FreedomPop, an internet company offering the world's first free mobile service initiative, is expanding its network to welcome new handsets running on the world's second largest mobile operating system, iOS. For the first time, FreedomPop is offering an iPhone 5 directly to customers, which can be used to make free calls, messages and data. The company is also letting Sprint customers connect their off-contract iPhones to its network to enjoy free and low cost wireless service.
FreedomPop limited itself to offer refurbished devices that run only on Android, but it is now turning a new page to mark continuous growth. The Los Angeles-based internet company, which was launched in October 2012 with an aim to deliver free and fast mobile services to all smartphone users in the U.S., currently offers Samsung Galaxy SII for $169, Privacy Phone, HTC EVO 4G for $119 and wireless hotspot devices such as Freedom Hub - Burst, LTE Hotspot, Photon, Freedom Stick - Bolt, Freedom Sleeve Rocket and Freedom Spot Overdrive Pro. All devices are designed to use FreedomPop's free or low cost services anywhere at home or on the go. The service does not require customers to sign up to a new contract or pay monthly overages.
With the addition of iPhone handsets under its banner, FreedomPop is giving an open and affordable opportunity to enjoy basic mobile service at no charge. The company only requires users to purchase the handset directly from FreedomPop in order to avail the profitable services. The official website lists the iPhone 5 for $349 and gives users 200 voice minutes, 500 messages and 500MB of data per month, all for free. In addition, Sprint customers can also bring their off-contract iPhone 4, 4S and 5 and connect with the new free service plan.
If customers think the basic free voice, text and data limit is too less, FreedomPop offers other plans starting just at $5 a month that includes unlimited talk and text and with 500MB LTE data.
The service is only available in the U.S. and the company has gained significant popularity over the course of time. The company announced its first milestone of more than 100,000 subscribers in August and revealed plans to hit the 500,000 mark by third or fourth quarter this year.
FreedomPop is also aiming to expand its smartphone portfolio in the next few months with new entries such as LTE-capable Galaxy SIII and Galaxy S4 for a reasonable under $200 and under $300 price range, respectively, company's CEO Stephen Stokols toldRe/Code.
