Heisman trophy-winning quarterback Jameis Winston received an adult civil citation for reportedly shoplifting $32.72 worth of crablegs from a Publix grocery store in Tallahassee, Fla., this Tuesday, Michael Wood, director of law enforcement for Leon County told USA Today.
"I'm not here to vindicate or vilify Jameis. ... He left without paying. That warrants a civil citation for petty theft," Wood said during a news conference.
Police reportedly showed up to Winston's residence this week for questioning. The athlete said he did not remember to pay for the seafood.
"He was very cooperative and he seemed fairly honest in that he did not pay for the item," Woods wrote in a statement.
According to USA Today, Winston has seven days to get in touch with Leon County Sherriff's civil citation program. At that time, he must complete a required 20 hours of community service to have the incident erased from his record.
"It's for first-time offenders," Wood said in the statement. "There's a list of minor, non-violent, non-sexual offenses that qualify. Program staff could also tack on more hours."
Winston is reportedly suspended from FSU's baseball team, per an announcement from the squad's baseball coach.
"As a result of his citation last night, we are suspending Jameis Winston from the baseball team. I am confident he will complete his community service obligation and the situation will be resolved soon."
Florida State football coach Jimbo Fisher said he backed Winston's decision, and believed the athlete would correct the situation.
"I fully support Coach Martin's decision and will also make sure that Jameis meets all obligations, which I know he will," Fisher said in the statement.
Winston's attorney Tim Jansen, along with the FSU athletics department, have not responded to phone calls, according to USA Today.
Tomahawknation.com reportedly first broke the story, but did not disclose where their information came from.
