Disney has a new villain, and her name is Kristin Chenoweth.
The 45-year-old actress and singer will play the "Sleeping Beauty" villain Maleficent in the action movie "Descendants," according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film will reportedly focus on a group of teenage children playing Disney's most iconic villains.
According to Entertainment Weekly, "'Descendants'" will revolve around the teenage children of some of Disney's best villains who have been imprisoned on a forbidden island. The kids are sent to a prep school and encounter a group of teenage children, who spring from Disney's best heroes. The film will focus on the importance of "nature or nurture."
"Descendants is set in a present-day idyllic kingdom, with the benevolent teenage son of the King and Queen (Beast and Belle), Ben, poised to take the throne," The Hollywood Reporter explained. "His first proclamation: offer a chance at redemption to the trouble-making offspring of Cruella De Vil (Carlos), Maleficent (Mal), the Evil Queen (Evie) and Jafar (Jay), who have been imprisoned on a forbidden island with the other villains, sidekicks, evil stepmothers and stepsisters."
Chenoweth's character will reportedly clash with her on onscreen daughter Mal, who will be played by "Liv and Maddie" star Dove Cameron. The film will as feature Booboo Stewart as Jafar's son, Sofia Carson as the Evil Queen's daughter Evie, Cameron Boyce as Cruella de Vil's son and Mitchell Hope as Belle and the Beast's son, Ben.
"High School Musical" director Kenny Ortega will direct and organize choreography with Paul Becker. Josann McGibbon and Sara Parriott wrote the script. Production for the film is set to begin in late May. The movie is scheduled to premiere on the Disney Channel network in 2015.
Actress Angelina Jolie will also be playing the role of Maleficent on the big screen. Jolie's version of the film put a dark spin on the fairytale, which also stars Elle Fanning and Brenton Thwaites.
Jolie's version of "Maleficent" hit theaters on May 30.
