After a teacher's laptop projected a pornographic photo in a classroom, two Kansas high school students were suspended for capturing it, USA Today reported.
The school's technology use policy, which bans students from using cellphones in class, was violated by the two students. Administrators at J.C. Harmon High School gave the students two-day suspensions, KCTV-TV in Kansas City, Kan., reported.
"I believe my son got in trouble because the school was trying to hide something," Karen Winkel, the mother of one of the students, told KCTV.
The photo was posted on Facebook after Winkels' son shared it with a friend.
"When she came home from school she was crying her eyes out, unable to speak about what had happened. It was very upsetting that this is happening when our kids are in school, when they are supposed to be learning," Laura Lester, the mother of the other student, told KCTV.
The pornographic picture was reportedly on the teacher's laptop at JC Harmon, located off of Steele Road in Kansas City, KS, during the first hour biology class for Lester's freshman daughter, according to USA Today.
"The picture was a pornographic picture," Winkel said.
"According to the girl, when her teacher turned on the overhead projector which runs off his computer, a pornographic snap shot for a website appeared," KCTV reported. "Stunned and extremely uncomfortable Lester said her daughter took a picture. It shows the laptop and projector and, in the background, there's an image of a naked woman in a compromising position from behind."
"I know my daughter was very uncomfortable," Lester said.
The teacher in question has worked in the district since 2002, said David Smith, spokesman for Kansas City Public Schools, in an interview with USA TODAY Network.
Smith said he could not comment on whether the teacher was disciplined.
He added that the school "works very hard to maintain strong relationships with parents and continues to be willing to sit down with the parents in this case and work through any issues."
