Food Blogger Eats Wife's Placenta Cooked in a Taco and Uncooked in a Smoothie, ‘It was Actually Pretty Good’ (PHOTOS)

New father and food blogger Nick Baines cooked and ate his wife's placenta. Baines documented the experience in a post for The Guardian explaining that ever since his wife became pregnant with their first child, he's been wondering what the placenta would taste like.

In the post, Baines said that moments after his wife gave birth to their son, he asked the doctors if he could take the placenta home.

"It is mere moments after the birth of my son and, still basking in the euphoria of parenthood, I make the request," he wrote. "The mood changes, the smiles of the midwives melt into looks of bewilderment, then repulsion."

Baines said one of the nurses cut the placenta into "steak" sized slices, put it in a bag and gave it to him. Once back home, the blogger went to work on his placenta meals. Baines wrote that the first thing he tried was a smoothie.

He said that he put the uncooked placenta, bananas and coconut milk into a blender and mixed it all together. The result was less than tasty and Baines admitted that it made him a little nauseous.

"Up front was the distinct flavor of banana, superseded by a metallic, bloody backnote," Baines wrote on The Guardian. "It had a mineral earthiness to it and tasted exactly like the delivery room had smelled."

So the first recipe was a fail but Baines didn't let that stop him. Next he seasoned the placenta, cooked it and turned it into a taco.

"As I seasoned it on the chopping board, the bright, almost glowing red chunk of placenta was more attractive than many cuts of offal I've dealt with, and looked quite appetizing," he said. "The meat was rich, with a beef-like quality. It was tender, kind of like roast brisket and not dissimilar to Texas BBQ."

He said he had read stories of people feeling "weird and jittery" followed by a burst of rage after ingesting placenta but he was proud to say he felt fine and his "mood was unchanged."
