Game 1 went into overtime and ended with a goal by Rangers center Derick Brassard, giving New York a 3-2 win. Brassard's wrist shot came from an assist by winger Benoit Pouliot, who, long with winger Mats Zuccarello, makes one of the Rangers' most effective lines.
"Since Christmas they've probably been our most consistent line," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault told the Associated Press. "They've got real good chemistry. They read off one another and support one another well and ... they scored two in overtime."
While Pittsburgh enjoyed rest after their 4-0 sweep in the first round, the Rangers went into Game 1 after finishing a seven-game series against the Philadelphia Flyers.
"Yeah we played seven games and the seventh one was a grueling match but I think most of us have been through it," Pouliot said. "It's the NHL and you have to find a way and we did."
Lee Stempniak and James Neal provided the only two goals for Pittsburgh in the second-round opener. Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, meanwhile, was again held without a goal.
"You have to make sure you learn from it and make sure you're better in the next one," Crosby said of his team's loss. "You have to get better as the playoffs go on. ... We just (have to) make sure we're playing on our toes. You have to expect they're going to get chances but make sure we're aggressive and creating things ourselves."
