A Nokia Lumia 520 smartphone saved an off-duty cop's life by taking a bullet when he walked in to a hostage situation during a robbery at his parents' house.
In what better ways can one test a smartphone's durability than putting it through a real gunshot test. Nokia can add a check sign on a gunshot test for its Lumia 520, as the smartphone proved its sturdiness by not letting the bullet pass through. Though the smartphone was not commissioned to be tested that way but it accidentally took a bullet, resulting in saving an off-duty cop's life.
A Brazilian military police officer was visiting his parents' house at Alexandrina Street Vieira Monteiro, Residential Garden in White Water last Thursday, to request his mother to wash his uniform. The 24-year-old cop was unaware that two robbers had taken his parents and another relative as hostages for about 30 minutes. But when the criminals saw the police uniform, they opened fire. The off-duty cop escaped one of the bullets, while the other one fortunately hit the Lumia 520, which was inside his rear pocket, according to a Brazilian website Globo (Google translated) that first reported the incident.
The budget smartphone did not survive the bullet as it was completely destroyed, but the strong chassis was able to stop the bullet from passing through, Pocket-Lint reports. The criminals fled the scene before the cops could catch them. Before fleeing, the robbers got their hands on as many valuables, including several phones, jewelry, watches and cash.
A similar incident took place last year, where a HTC EVO 3D smartphone played the main role in saving a man's life when a robbery went wrong, The Phones Guide reported last October. The smartphone was kept in the victim's shirt pocket and saved the man's life by deflecting the bullet. The Taiwanese smartphone maker extended a courteous gesture by gifting a brand new EVO 3D to the survived victim.
Microsoft or Nokia did not make any statements about the incident. It remains to be seen whether the newly merged company will also gift a brand new phone to the survivor, who's certainly a big Nokia fan now.
